How to Check River Conditions Before You Drive

Nothing burns a fishing day faster than a two-hour drive to a river that's blown out, too warm, or dropped so low the fish are stacked in three pools. Ninety seconds of homework prevents it.

The 90-second checklist

1. Streamflow (USGS CFS). Compare current CFS to the seasonal median. Anywhere from 70–130% is prime. Above 200% is usually a blowout unless you're targeting streamer water on the inside seams.

2. Water temperature. 50–65°F is the trout feeding sweet spot. Above 68°F, don't fish — even a released trout can die. Below 40°F, fish very slow and small.

3. Barometric pressure trend. A steady or rising trend over the last 6 hours is a bite-on signal. Falling pressure ahead of a front sometimes triggers a feeding push right before the storm, then shuts things down for a day.

4. Recent rain. More than half an inch in the last 24 hours near the headwaters will muddy freestone rivers for 1–3 days. Tailwaters shrug it off.

5. Solunar timing. Two major and two minor windows per day. Plan your best two hours around one of them.
