What Is a Solunar Calendar and Does It Work for Fishing?
A no-nonsense explanation of solunar theory, when it actually predicts a better bite, and when it's noise.
A solunar calendar predicts daily "major" and "minor" feeding windows for fish and game based on the position of the sun and moon relative to your location. Two majors and two minors per day, each lasting roughly 1–2 hours.
Does it work?
The honest answer
For freshwater trout: solunar timing is a real signal, but weaker than water temperature, streamflow, and hatch timing. If those three are wrong, solunar timing won't save the day. If those three are right, hitting a major window can turn a good day into a great one.
For bass and other warmwater species: the correlation is stronger. Fish that feed opportunistically respond more to moon-driven biological rhythms than trout keyed to insect emergence.
How to use it
Treat solunar windows as a tiebreaker, not a starting point. Pick your river based on CFS and water temp; pick your fly based on the hatch; then aim your best two hours at the closest major window. Angler Tech's Strike Zone forecast weights all four signals into a single 0–100 score so you don't have to combine them by hand.
What to ignore
- Solunar apps that show "excellent day" ratings without asking your location or species. Meaningless.
- Anything based purely on moon phase without incorporating conditions. New moon vs. full moon is real, but it's a small factor compared to whether the water is 55°F and flowing at median.
